this option has been in most if not all sony/ ericsson phones, what does it do? it has a list of networks from around the world?

If your roaming it allows you to enter the networks you'd prefer to use as some are cheaper than other. In the cases of some networks this list exists on the sim already. This message was posted from a Z600

If you are not locked to a certain network, the answer is yes. In addition your phone needs to have the band the network uses.

i tried this with a 3g sim and all i get is "Inactive Sim" and the phone crashes.

That's because your phone does not work on 2100MHz, the GSM frequency for UMTS.

K700i wont work with a 3G sim as it is different. When you are in your home country the phone will only go to your own network. When you go abroad the phone will search for a local network, when there is more than one network it will select the network that it highest on the prefered network list.

ok cool, i knoew 3g is a diffrent frequesncy, but on some normal phones it works and only roams on o2.
