Although most of us see that the joystick is the ideal way to use a phone I've come to a new conclusion. Well I don't know if its new but I haven't seen this opinion yet. The jog-dial is SAFER for your phone. I have a J70, and used it for 2.5 years and now am using a T630 and I swear that I've dropped my T630 more times in 3 months than I managed with my J70 in 2.5 years. I also think ithas to do with how you hold the phone. With a jog-dial your hand is wrapped around the phone so your thumb can use the dial, but with joystick your phone is basically just resting on your fingers and is more likely to fall. Another factor is where the controller is, the jog dial is very near the top of the phone while the joystick is almost in the middle of the phone, and what' going to make it worse is that as screens get bigger we'll get smaller keypads and the joystick towards the bottom half of the phone and make the balance even more dangerous for your phone.

And then we get UIQ3 and it seems its going to do away with the jog-dial in non touchscreen phones if not all SE smartphones.

What I would like is a new line of regular phones with jog-dials, while not as nices as animated 3x4 menus, twirling 3D menus where nice too and it would make phones for people that are too clumsy for joysticks.

I find the joystick quicker as it is closer to the rest of the keypad buttons but I suppose the Jogdial makes the phone more secure in your hands.

I always think it is better to go for one handed operation but I think the ideal handset would have both.

ps: I hardly ever drop my phone but then I have big hands

I find the jog dial harder and slower to use on the P series rather than a joystick, but im not a big fan of the joystick either. I've always preferred the directional pad of the Z1010 / Z800 / Z600.

I have to agree though, the jog dial method is safer for your phone. Having said that, i rarely drop my phones anymore because i keep a wrist strap on every one of them to avoid such accidents.

Whats an arrow?

I think the peg type joystick, like on the T610 is the easiest to use as you have a better grip under your thumb. It is much better than the push type like on the S700 and I find the K700 joystick takes more effort to manoeuvre.

Why not have both ? But i guess i prefer a joystick. It's easier and quicker than using a joystick.
