Consumers create the over pricing of products through the desperation of must have attitudes.
If consumers would wait some time after new units hit the stands, it would cause the makers to set reasonable prices to minimize loss. However when the public creates hoopla and a must have frenzy attitude, the makers see this as an opportunity to over price.
SE is salavating at the thought of all that are drooling and expressing purchasing upon release. As consumers, we have buying power. However it is based on how we react to a marketing campaign. Never overreact. Do you do this when shopping for a home or an auto? If you do, you will definitely pay more.

Disagree! This has always been a trend in almost all products in the market. Almost all new product when released is priced high. This has been there for sometime now and not a phenomenon of yesterday. And this is also prevailing in the US market not just UK. The extra price you say is the value for having one of the first pieces in the market.
Edit: this is also relevant to other goods in market like mp3 players not just phones.

Why buy anything? New products will always be higher when they are first released because people want them more then. Either buy it or don't.
