As of yesterday I keep getting this popup message: The time has changed. Do you want to update your time to… No Yes

I don’t know why it started.

I have never gotten the message before and now it happening many times a day. Any ideas?

The only unusual thing I did yesterday when this started was go out of town to Novato and there was poor reception there. I thought that was why it kept asking to change the time. Every time it would get a partial connection. Now I’m back home in Napa where I’ve been using the phone and it is still doing it.

Have you turned on auto update of date and time? This message was posted from a K500

I am also in Northern California and I have the same problem, but it has been happening ever since the switch to daylight savings time. I'll do my best to explain the problem to you...

The auto time update is controlled by the local network you are on, and not by some central service. Some areas with older hardware adjust the time by changing the time zone to GMT -9 while some of the newer areas have features that allow them to leave the timezone as GMT -8 but inform the phone to add an hour for daylight savings. Obviously for newer phones the second option is preferable, but some older phones don't support that. Either way, when you switch from a newer tower to an older one (or the other way around) your phone will ask you to update the time, but it will ask you to change it to what appears to be the same time.

I had a long discussion with Cingular about this last summer. At first they couldn't figure out what it was and wound up replacing my T616, but upon talking to more and more Technical Support people we pieced together the explanation above. I hope they do something about it. Until then I suggest turning off the auto update time feature.

In the Time & date control panel you can set the time update to Prompt, Auto or off. I assume either off or Auto would stop the pop ups. However you set your actual Time Zone in the International control panel.

Spyware or Adware most likely, even if you think it isn't, it is probably deeper into your system than you think.

@Chazzer bit of a conspiracy theory there. I have never heard of spyware on a cell phone. These are not pop-ups in the internet explorer sense, but little dialog boxes. Besides, I thought I already gave a proper explanation

This happens with my GF's Z600 after you switch it on/off.

@Res like I said, this used to happen on my T616 everytime I got in the car and drove anywhere. This only happens during daylight savings time and is a result of networks not having a consistent way of controlling time across their entire system.

I agree with the previous explanation for it being a network issue rather than spyware. I have this issue each time I move from Uk to Us timezone, but the worst auto update was when going from San Fran to Utah. After the 20th, very annoying, update or so, switch off phone, remove batt, restart, and hey presto, correct time and no more updates! Has affected both my SE and Siemens phones when in USA.
Travelling Uk to France doesn't cause a problem (except for the air traffic control;-)).
