i use them i find them ok they get a bit of critisim for there system but i must say i find it good. i just log into aol and use firefox as my browser. there broadband packages are very competitive i have a 512k £17.99 a month unlimited access whoich is great compared to some packages that limit you to 1gb a month.
i checked the speed and its more often than not running at nearly 500k so no complains there. i dont use aol channels so can comment on them and i use my own firewalls and anti virus.
but all in all it works well for me
hope this helps a bit

Ah, honestly, I wouldn't go with AOL. I have been with them before, and I gotta say, they suck. Their customer service is crappy, their speed is average (yeah, close to full almost all the time, but I've got better now).
The main thing is customer service. I mean, I know a fair bit about computers, but calling their service line and trying to explain a problem is useless, 'cause the suggest things like "is your router plugged in?" WTF! I have just described a very precise problem to do with FTP, and they are asking me if my router is plugged in!
But meh, its not just me. There are AOL haters worldwide

HOWEVER SMALL IT MAY BE?!?!?!? Bloody hell Govi, AOL owns half of America!!!!
(EDIT: Oh b*****ks, just re-read your original post, you meant however small the information, not the company... shoot me now

)
Anyway, AOL are one of the biggest, longest established and most experienced ISPs out there. They've taken a lot of flack over the years for several reasons, mostly because until recently, you were forced to use their own browser software in order to use their services. This has changed now, but rather than write a novel, I'll just list what I think are their good and bad points:
Good Points:
-Easy to install and set up
-Browser software is very good for inexperienced internet users
-Freephone technical support
-Fairly comprehensive range of services (dial-up and broadband packages)
-Very stable broadband connections and reasonable speeds
-Fairly stable dial-up connections
-Excellent reliability (I've used their broadband for 3 years now, can't recall any substantial dowtime at all!)
-Excellent Spam filtering
-Good parental controls (only if using their browser)
-You won't get browser hijackers (only if using their browser)
Bad Points:
-The browser is bulky and excessive for experienced users. Luckily, you don't have to use their browser at all now, you can connect directly via your modem / router.
-More expensive than most other providers for any given package
-IMAP email accounts, can be tricky to get Outlook / Outlook express to work with it sometimes
-Can be tricky to set up internet connection sharing on networks. Some routers don't work properly with AOL

i do agree the customer services aint great but them show me a comapny of that size who have good customer services, i dont know of any. as for sorting problems out they work on the princple that not everyone is a genius and start from the bottom and work up. if you speak to the tech dept they do know there stuff.
ive used them for 6 years and only had to phone uptwiceonce to get broadband and once to get the access numbers on dail up when i formatted my hdd.
i know loads of people grip about them but i would rather have unlimited access than go with a so called good company and get bills at the end of every month for going over my download limit
i always think that its best to try them out for yourself, know its harder with broadband as they often want a 12month contract but you can try the dail up and see how you find them and try some other companies there are plenty offering a decent service

My experience with them as customer service was terrible, but they may have improved it a bit now.
As for the download limit thing, I have 1mb and I have a "limit" of 150Gb per month. Thats amazing, considering if you kept downloading 24/7 at FULL SPEED I can download just over 200Gb of stuff... And seeing as I actually DON'T download 24/7 only the occasional (maybe 3 per week) 700mb file

and about 10 150mb files per week, the 150Gb "limit" is really huge! My max so far has been about 80Gb, and that was a really intesive month
