> Sending sms via gprs

hiyas, tried to search for topics about this but couldnt find anything..
Was looking through my T68i menus before and noticed an option to send SMS via GPRS.. Now i selected GPRS, tried to send a text message, but just said 'Sending SMS' and after a minute it fails...
I know operators proabably wont let us send SMS via GPRS because its so cheap and they'd lose lots of revenue from ripping us off at 10p a text but it would be nice to have the option!
Also if you send via GPRS (in theory) can only people with a GPRS handset and connection recieve the text?

I'm afraid SMS doesn't quite work like that. It is sent as an SMS data call (on GSM setting) to it's SMSC, and is charged at a (albeit high) fixed rate on a per message basis to the SMSC. If the SMSC is not that of your operator and is say a foreign one from another country, then that message could be billed at another (perhaps higher) rate by your operator (for the 1st leg of the journey anyway).
On GPRS it would still have to dial through to it's SMSC and be charged accordingly, but it may be possible that the small amount of SMS data will also register on the GPRS APN and another charge applied for the connection.
Most GSM operators only use GSM for SMS and disable it on GPRS.

An SMS, whether sent via GSM or GPRS, is still an SMS. The only difference is in how the data was sent. Operators can still determine if you send an sms over gprs, and charge you accordingly. Btw, messages are sent faster to the smsc when gprs is used.

VoiceStream allows it, and it is 10 times faster than sending an SMS via GSM. I noticed that European operators do not allow it. VoiceStream has a separate bucket of free SMS for use with GPRS, I beleive.

I'm on a UK network with GPRS.
I just wanted to mention that I send SMS's over GPRS @ the cost of sending over GSM.

A long SMS may slightly benefit from a GPRS connection (if you are able to use it on your network), but a standard 160 character SMS is not really going to be any noticably faster on GPRS - if it is then something is seriously wrong with your GSM network!

A GPRS message on VoiceStream sends 3 times as fast than a 160 character messages sent via GSM.

When sending an SMS or making a call, you will need to first reserve your own bandwidth and comm channel and other things ... when making a call, since this takes around 3 seconds but you speak for minutes, this is not noticeable.
On the other hand, 160 character sent at 9.6 kbps makes less then .1 seconds ... so the 3 second connection period becomes quite long!
As you would have remarked, GPRS connections are generally "instant" since a channel is semi-reserved for your usage. Therefore, SMS sent over GPRS will be a lot faster, mostly if you're sending some group SMS messages, are doing an SMS chat or use a very available network (all those will generally make the network "reserve" you channels, so you don't have to reconnect for every activity)
