Active posters are standard printed advertising posters that would be found on hoardings, at bus stops, outside cinemas or the Underground. Unlike standard posters, they have
special "barcodes" printed on them. These are read using standard camera phones and link the poster to online content, applications and services. For example, one could "click" on a poster to download music, buy tickets to a show, order a taxi or answer quiz questions. Each active poster can have its own
unique barcode, so the service offered can be specific to a particular location. For example, a shop near to a particular bus stop could offer a special discount on an advertised product. The special barcodes can link any printable surfaces such as books, magazines, leaflets and stickers in addition to certain types of digital display screens to on-line content in all kinds of urban/suburban/rural situations.
There were active posters at the
Animated Encounters International Festival and members of the public were able to try them out.Two of the posters we used are as follows:

I guess its the way of the future and kind of reminds me of that Tom Cruise movie Minority Report where posters and other things scan your eye to identify you as you pass and offer advertising specific to your previous purchases or likes

Yes i remember that article,but even though they pretty much do a similer thing the
interactive posters use infrared rather than
QR codes with this version.
I loved the future technology in Minority report but don't like the idea of my eyes being scanned everytime i travel somewhere.I hope that never happens,freedom and is the most important thing and if we lose that then everything is meaningless.even though we are much closer to a big brother society than ever before.

well I guess we're already starting to see something similar in the form of RFID and when that reaches its full potential it won't be too dissimilar to the eye scan, and of course there are lots of privacy concerns over RFID too...

I agree with you axxxr, I wouldn't want to be scanned eveywhere i go either. Advertising is invasive enough as it is. But I do like the idea of active posters. Too expensive for downunder though I bet.
