...with the following text... so nothing new here!
Amazon.co.uk Preview
Confirmed details of the PlayStation 3 have not yet been released by Sony. The information below is therefore subject to change.
As yet there's relatively little concrete information about the PlayStation 3, with Sony, along with Nintendo, holding off on their grand unveiling until the E3 games show in Los Angeles this May. What they have been keen to talk about so far is the new console's heart, the successor to the PS2's Emotion Engine.
The details of the Cell chip, co-produced by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, will be lost on most non-technical people: it uses a revolutionary new manufacturing process to create a chip with eight synergistic processors and top clock speeds of greater than 4GHz. What this means in English is that it will be orders of magnitude more powerful than the PS2, and perhaps even its forthcoming next generation rivals.
Little else is known for definite about the PlayStation 3, but it seems likely that the graphic chip will be created by nVidia, who are the graphics technology rivals to ATi--the latter are producing the graphics chips for the Xbox's next-gen successor and Nintendo Revolution. The new console is also likely to utilise Blu-Ray discs. Blu-Ray is one of the technologies set to replace DVD and will mean even more data can be stored on a single disc; it should also mean that the PlayStation 3 will be able to play Blu-Ray movies, just as the PlayStation 2 can play DVDs.
Everything else about the PlayStation 3 is conjecture, although Sony have long hinted that they wish to expand on the ideas and technology used by the EyeToy camera, and that something similar to this may be built into the console itself. The ability to play games online is also likely to be included as standard.
In terms of games absolutely nothing is known, but considering that Sony have a reputation for developing top-rate games and have always enjoyed the largest amount of third party support from publishers around the world, the PlayStation 3 should get little wrong in this respect. After all, who wouldn't want to see next-generation, photorealistic sequels to the likes of Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto?
As for a release date, current rumours point towards a spring 2006 launch in Japan, which should put the console on course for a Christmas 2006 or Easter 2007 release in Europe. Whenever it is, though, the wait is likely to be well worth it.
