Whats does 5.1ch means on the DVD players?..whats the function?

well, i guess it has to do with the number of speakers that can be connected to the dvd player and TV for a more comprehensive home theater effect... The higher the channel figure, the better the Home theatre coverage.. i guess 5.1 is the highest i have seen so far...

7.1 is the highest. The number 5 in 5.1 indicates 5 channels or 5 speakers and the 1 represents the woofer, so 5.1 = 4 surround speakers + 1 central speaker + 1 woofer
edit : nope, 9.1 is highest, just confirmed with google and here's the stuff -

My friend has a 7.1 Creative Labs speakers and man, they ROCK ! The sound quality is soooooo smoooth and awesome ! he has a special creative labs soundcard to utilize the speakers too.... but it costs a lot :/ I could buy a low level P4 computer for that price
