A few days ago i placed my k700 in my school bag and I think i crushed it with my books and stuff...the inside of the screen cracked and there was this line right across the screen. Since I only got the phone for 2 months or so, i decided to bring it up to the SE centre to repair it (under warranty).
They charged me HK$845 just to fix the bloody screen....thats like more than 1/3 the cost of the phone. I was enraged and powerless....my friend who uses the nokia 6230 told me it only cost him around HK$400 to fix his screen when something like that heppened...
Is it THAT expensive to fix the screen??? This is one of my first complains against SE. I like their phones but if this is what they make their customer pay then i'm going to give up on them soon...

The prices of phones decline over time. However, the repair costs do not. Cheaper phones cost less to repair than more expensive phones.

Some reason (other industry such computer and consumer electronics is apply) :
a. Service cost : more people/technician is a cost for the company. And the cost is not declining (well, their salary and compensation is not decreasing over time).
b. Spare parts cost : it is including the manufacturing and inventory cost. Most of the main spare parts of specific product made at the beginning life cycle of the product. Hence, the cost production still high.
Also need room (space) for storing those spare parts. The cost for the space and maintaining the inventory will occur. Those such as : rent space (or even building investment), utility expense (electricity, water, air conditioner, etc), salary for people, etc. And these costs have upward trend over time.
c. Most mobile phone manufacturing does not have a 'service pack' business system. You cannnot prolonged the warranty period of the phone. In computer industry, most leading brands allow you to extend the period of warranty with some amount of money. Only mobile phone created by computer manufacturer such as HP have this system.
d. Based on my knowledge the most expensive spare part of a mobile phone is :
1. Screen.
2. Main board/phone engine
3. Some special chips (such as bluetooh)
And comparing the Nokia 6230 screen is not completely right. Nokia 6230 only produce 128 X 128 pixel resolution and the size is a lot smaller. The K700 have larger size and occupy resolution of 176 X 220. Almost twice pixels than Nokias. The more the pixels the more difficult the screen to manufactured because the probability of dead pixel is increasing.
As comparison, the nokia S60 series such 3660, 6600, 6630 etc (with those large screens) have the same resolution with smaller K700 screen.

also add to this nokias bulk buying power over se they will purchase probably 3 times the number of screens se do and be able to nuy them at cheaper prices as a result

o btw i also got them to check my battery...seemed to be weak...can't even last 2 days on normal usage (10 mins on fone each day...no games...1-2 smses...)
moral: don't put ur fone in a bag with heavy stuff...
Any of you guys experienced something similar? Did you have to pay that much? Just curious...

110 USD to replace the screen on this recent mid/high end model is not excessive. Labour cost alone could be 50 USD.

My K700 is also in need of a new screen at the moment. Been without it for about a month now. Tried to get it done as a warranty job but wouldn't be done... they wanted £75 for a new screen... I could get the phone for £139. I shopped around and got around £40-£45 as the cheapest repair quote. I don't think I'm going to bother though.... I'm just going to claim the full value of the phone off insurance and then sell the remainders. I'm free to buy a new one then or another model... I think I'll wait for the new K750 when the K700 price will drop but I think I might go for a different model. Great phone but it's just not that strong or durable.
Someone I know's Nokia took a serious bashing before it finally gave in... he used to throw it around, drop it and even threw it as far as he could on concrete. The phone fell apart but it still worked fine after he put it back together. First day he had it he was throwing it up in the air as high as he could. A girl I'm friends with's Nokia was thrown out of a moving bus (it wasn't moving fast but moving quick enough) and still it was fine. I just don't see that happening with a K700.

I've dropped my
's grimmacingly before, but nothings happened with them, if you're not stupid about where you put a phone, ANY phone then it should last a while.
Considering the amount of people that survive drunken nights out with their phones, they aren't that flimsy either.
