Does anyone know if Cingular will run UMTS on the same frequency as the one being used for 3G UMTS in Europe? If not, then what frequency will they use here un the U.S. for UMTS? versus the frequency currently in place in Europe.

As a general info, while 3G will run on WCDMA in the US,which is an upgrade based on CDMA technology, in Europe most of the operators r using UMTS which is almost the same thing but based on GSM technology. I doubt u can use the same phone.

UMTS is short for: Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. You can say that UMTS is a term used just like 3G, it's not the name of the system.
WCDMA will be used in both USA and Europe, it's the same technology used in both areas.

What you're saying is not making sense. UMTS is a wireless technology. WCDMA is the radio technology used within UMTS. Cingular is implementing WCDMA at this moment but will also roll-out HSDPA on their WCDMA networks in the future to reach higher speeds.
In the U.S., UMTS signals are transmitted on the 1,900-MHz frequency band, while most other countries use 2,100 MHz.

I apologize for that.. I've been out of it lately. Last thing I heard from a close friend of mine @ Cingular (I no longer work there), they will be rolling out UMTS really soon and I was not aware of them launching HSDPA until I read it in the news somewhere. I need to follow up with that cat since I no longer work there.

No probs! My friend at Cingular said that they have UMTS in some cities already and some people trying it out but they have a shortage of handsets.

Supposedly, by the end of the year Cingular will have it in it's top 100 markets. Wichita, KS being number 99! Hehe, bearly.
And the handsets available for WCDMA in the US (1900mhz band) are all ugly and very crappy as far as features go. Hopefully there will be a Nokia N70b version with WCDMA 1900. I have no idea what SE plans to do.

To add to what others have said, UMTS/WCDMA in the US - with Cingular, at least - will run on both 1900 and 850 mhz. Also, they claim to have it rolled out in their top 15 to 20 markets, not 100. I think HSDPA (which is a software upgrade, by the way) is supposed to roll out next year, 1Q or 2Q.
