Atrac is proprietary audio compression codec owned by Sony. Like .ogg the file sizes are smaller than MP3 while retaining more of the original audio information. Supposedly Atrac is capable of replicating the sound of an MP3 file at half the size.

Sony uses Atrac3 format in their minidisc and HD based music players as well as their MP3-CD players. Until recently these players discretely converted just about any format into Atrac3 or Atrac3plus while loadeng the music onto your device. However with their new CEO Sony is now allowing their components to directly playback formats other than Atrac.

1/2 the size of mp3!!! that sounds great...it would rocket sales if the format is supported purely on devices, including the k and t series

I don't think it would help sales of products in the slightest. Atrac3 has been around for years and has never really made any sort of news. The problem is that is only used on a select set of Sony devices, devices that until now would have been better served playing multiple formats instead of just Atrac3. Now that Sony has allowed their HiMD and HD based audio players to play MP3 and WAV i think Atrac is just about dead. In order to play Atrac3 on your computer you have to use Sony's SonicStage software, which is just about the most confusing, unstable piece of software I have ever seen in my life. Sony makes great hardware, but their software and firmware needs serious help.

In my personaly opinion Ogg is a better format because it is free and open source. Even WMA is better because it is supported by more devices and players than Atrac3.

true..ogg provides matchable quality at a lower mem occupancy..but not 50%!! i mean..this would be great for devices with no memory expansion

My experience is that MP3 to Atrac3 conversions sound relatively bad if you are decreasing the file size. Also I have only ever managed to get an excellent sounding small file by ripping it from CD into Atrac3plus. My guess is that since MP3 and Atrac3 are lossy formats, they must discard different sound info, so converting between the two can result in discarding some noticeable sound info. My general policy is don't convert between lossy formats, only convert from lossless to lossy. (So WAV to MP3 or CD to Ogg)
