I have got a company sim on Orange Contract. When I put it in my phone and goto status it says that GPRS is not attached.

When GPRS is not attached, does this mean I can't do MMS and WAP. Also, if I get a 3G phone in time, is GPRS a vital thing that is needed.

Please could someone explain this to me in full, as I know O2 GPRS is a major part of MMS.

GPRS not attached means that you are not currently connected with the GRPS service and will be connected as when required, automatically. Like if your recieving an mms it will automatically connect and recieve it then detach again. This helps to save some of the battery life of the phone.

Also, same thing for WAP. when you browse a WAP page the connection dialog asks you to choose the connection you wish to use. If you choose a GPRS one then the GPRS will automatically attach until you disconnect, when it will detach.

You will still recieve MMS and be able to browse WAP so dont worry.

Hope this helps

When GPRS is not attached, you can't do MMS, WAP and anything GPRS-dependent.

If you get a 3G phone, you need a 3G network to put it to optimal use. GPRS and 3G are two independent platforms, so GPRS is a non-issue if you are rooting for 3G.

@dekesh: Maybe things work differently from place to place. On my network, you cannot do anything GPRS-dependent when GPRS is not attached.

but on the p-series if u set the network mode to GSM only then the GPRS becomes detatched and attaches automatically when it needs to for example when recieving an MMS or when connecting to WAP

I'm with Aya on this one - although I can't say I've tried setting to GSM only, what would be the point? Having GPRS simply attached surely doesn't cause much battery drain.

Most likely explanation is that your company have requested that GPRS is not activated on their phones to keep costs down. That often happens.

Yeah, I tried all that, having the GPRS settings for MMS and WAP. The GPRS status still says not attached. If I try and get on the net it says "ACCESS DENIED".
I think it is the case the company has disallowed access to GPRS.

While you MUST have GPRS set up to use MMS and other functions, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ATTACHED. When it's attach all it's doing is constantly searching for GPRS signal (wasting batteries) with it detached it will only turn on when prompted. Mine have been set at detached from day one and can always use MMS, email, browsing web, ect....
