> Sony seeks out Cingular to take on Centrino
Bookmark topic
BIG COMPANY Sony has launched a wireless notebook to compete with Intel’s Centrino.
Sony says its US-only, ultra-portable VAIO T-Series is the first 'widely-available' notebook PC with integrated high-speed wireless wide area network (WWAN) technology.
The notebook links to the Cingular Wireless nationwide EDGE Network, which, it says, is the fastest national wireless data network in the U.S.
Sony calls its wireless technology SmartWi. It allows users to toggle between various connectivity options using the PC's function keys, choosing WLAN for Wi-Fi or WWAN for access to the EDGE network when beyond the reach of wired networks or hotspots.
The notebook does the usual DVD playing and burning and stuff, sports a 10.6-inch wide-format LCD screen and uses 'battery optimization technology' to deliver between 3.5 to nine hours of action, Sony claims.
The T-Series notebooks will be available in June in the US for about $2,200.
