The days of perfume-scented envelopes sealed with a loving kiss might be numbered, as a new survey from Tesco Mobile has revealed that the text message is muscling out the love letter.
The study found that romantic Brits now start 40 per cent of their romances with the sweet beep-beep of their phones, although while vibrating alerts might tug the heartstrings, the reason for the mushy missives is more practical. The ever-pragmatic mobile user pointed out that rejection was far less embarrassing when limited to 160 characters.
But star-crossed texters do not stop at asking the objects of their affection out by mobile keypad, as Tesco Mobile found that one person in four would even accept an SMS marriage proposal (if sent by the right network partner, of course).
"It's easy to see why people like sending and receiving romantic texts: it's like storing mini love letters on your phone that you can read at any time. Text messages are now an accepted way of being romantic. More than a third of respondents to the survey would rather tell their partner they loved them by text than by phone," said Andy Dewhurst, chief executive of Tesco Mobile.
"At the end of the day a text is quick and immediate so it's a great way of acting on impulse."
And the research found that today's mobile generation does not see the text as a throwaway gesture.
One person in six spends more than an hour composing the content of a romantic text before hitting the send button, and half of us keep romantic texts with one person in three saying they would be devastated to their lose their mots d'amour.
But all this effort could be wasted, as close to 45 per cent of those surveyed have misinterpreted a text at some point, and more than a couple of texts from someone we like would make us think that they fancied us, the survey found.

Its great reading them over and over again, and being able to instantly share what you're both up to when you're not together.
I love SMS.
