@brix25 not old news to everyone.

Anyway, this is a perfect excuse for the companies to release more phones that need to be 'compatible'

They certainly seem to be forging ahead with these speeds don't they? . Up to 100 Mbps!!!?

I think it is a good thing some manufacturers are going down the HDD route.

High processor speeds and huge memory looks like the next way to go. Storing whole movies and TV series doesnt exactly seem that far away. (BTW. NTL it trialling mobile TV in Oxford)

The Sanyo W31SA is marketed as a 4G phone and that looks literally out of this world.

A standard is just a long way from real applications.
The most critical thing is whether heavy weight in the telecom industry wants to support it and whether there are enough users to give a good profit prospect for those heavy weights.

I know that many countries who have the vodafone network (ericsson and not lucent) are already adapting the new tegnology. It will stay 3G and no new network is needed. Initial speeds will boost to 6mbit/s download and 1,5 mbit upload. (compaired to 385kb/s down and 64kbit/s up.) this will be the speeds beginning next year and in 2007 going up to 100mbit/s!

update: Vodafone D2 in Germany already has successfull tests of super 3G.

although it does not requier a new network, there is a need for new mobiles that work with 3G.
