Microsoft founder Bill Gates sees mobile phones overtaking MP3s as the top choice of portable music player, and views the raging popularity of Apple's iPod player as unsustainable,he told a German newspaper.
"As good as Apple may be, I don't believe the success of the iPod is sustainable in the long run," he said in an interview published in Thursday's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
"You can make parallels with computers: Apple was very strong in this field before, with its Macintosh and its graphics user interface like the iPod today and then lost its position," Gates said.
We'll see... my money will always be on Apple.

If the ipod phone will be as ugly as the one i've seen (posted by u axxxr a while back) then no thanks! I prefer a smartphone with great extensibility and great multimedia capabilities (and also compact, yes devices with windows mobile) rather then a simple limited multimedia phone. Plus apple dont have experiences with mobile phones

I somehow doubt very much that apple will limit itself to the motorola itunes phones shown a while back....the market will no doubt get very competative for apple so they will eventually broaden their horizons and start converging ipods with phones and maybe other devices.
Your correct in saying that apple has no experience when it comes to phones, but was'nt it the same for them when they introduced ipod?..That was virgin territory for them and now they dominate.since music phones will be the way forward now, apple will have no choice but to bring out a phone/music player to keep up with market trends.

I think Bill's right. The format of a single-function pocket-size MP3 player is unsustainable. In an age where convergence is the buzzword, the iPod concept does not offer enough functionality. The one device that seems to be stealing the march on all others in terms of convergence is the mobile phone. It stands to reason that if your phone can (as well as being a phone) be your music and audio player, remote control, PDA/computer, TV, navigation system, why are you going to find room in your pocket for a device that only does one of these things, and not substantially better??
