Imagine if you lost your P =:-0
Lucky you, you have made a recent backup!
But you have important information stored there (only there) and you need it badly !!
What would you do ??
I've asked the question several times to myself and I still can't find an answer !
Would you buy a P because *you need* the information stored in the backup, knowing there is another good phone out there you would rather have?
How can we retrieve a contact in an SMS (stored in the backup), without buying a P?
Is it possible to install the emulator and use it like a real device, restoring a backup into the emulator?
(never seen the emulator myself)
???

That's a very good question.
I think there's probably a market for a simple, cheap, PC app that can extract data from the backup files..... if someone want to give it a go....

Yes, there is!
Backup Inspector:

But ... most of the files are in a proprietary format!
What good is it to extract files you can not decipher?

once i had a similar problem and i had to edit the contacts file to find a number. really really hard task. it was horrible even though i had some clues about the number i was looking for (i dont remember, but i think i had a recent sms from that number, or i had dialed it recently), so it was easier than it could have been...
ummm, now that i read it sounds like a weird story
well, just to give you some hope. not impossible

Let me tell you- I lost my P900 and thought that fortunately I had just done a back-up. So, I confidently bought the p910i, thinking that I could restore the p900 back-up to the new phone. Nada, nix, nothing. It's not possible, even SE will tell you. Only way around it for me (because I stupidly did not sync the phone with OUTLOOK) was to persuade a friend with a P900 to install my back-up and to bluetooth whatever information I really needed to the new phone. SAD, but TRUE.

If you use a SyncML-based remote backup service such as that provided by mobical.net or mightyphone.com, your data is stored in an independent format at the server end, as I understand it (independent of your particular phone, that is). If you lose your Px00, you can simply download that data to any other phone that supports SyncML.
