Is it possible to connect to a irc chat network today using WAP, GPRS?
If not, how many people would be interested in service like that(for free of course)?
Post here with your comments of what you think, and/or ideas how to make it work.
If enough people are interested, I'll see if I can fix somthing like that. But no promise.

irc.irc-hispano.org has a wap interface that I think lets you chat on a few channels on their network, but if youre not spanish, I dont think thats much use to you. I did a search for wap and irc myself, and found these -
http://www.valinor.sorcery.net/clients/platforms-wap.html - Theres an wap/irc gateway, that I assume lets you chat on IRC servers from a wapsite but the site doesnt seem to exist anymore. And theres a program called wapirc by an Alan Cox that I think you can run off a linux webserver that acts like the aforementioned -
ftp://ftp.linux.org.uk/pub/linux/alan/Software/Web/Wapirc/wapirc-0.2.tar.gz , but thats not much use to me without linux anymore. What I tried to do, is write a mIRC script, to act as a wapserver and host its own wapsite that would let me use IRC through my PC at home running mIRC and usually connected to IRC 24/7, I have a pretty basic understanding of mIRCscript, but im working on it.
Another approach I took was to connect to the IRC server on port 6667 (the irc port) using a wap/telnet client I found -
http://www.waptelnet.com/ - and send the commands directly to the irc server from the telnet console. But this didnt work very well because the wap/telnet client thing was buggy and very difficult to use, and would not echo back the PING request from the server that it sends that I need to PONG to so the server lets me in.
Im still scheming.

There is a plugin/script for irssi (unix/linux) that acts as a wapserver.
There problem is that you would have to reload all the time, although that can be done automatically. Anyway IRC/chat over wml is basicly useless. That's why there is something called mobile chat, although I'm not sure what that is or how that works.
Just as the phone has an integrated email-client, or wml-browser, it could have an IRC-client. I guess there are problems with that relating to the structure of the mobile network and so they haven't included it. An IRC-client can be made REALLY small (it wouldn't support scripts and stuff, just basic functionality) ...
That's why I always say we should have an SDK for the ericsson OS. Then it would be EASY. Just imagine the software-download sites for the phones. Forget logos and ringtones, it would be like "IRC-applet", "new game", etc ..
On thing that would _RULE_ would be to have an applet/docking-interface in the OS that you could write your own applications for .. then you could have a mail-fetching applet, a native AIM-client, an applet that fetched new background images twice everyday from a service making them like with respect to the weather outside.
NO ONE gains from having the phones so freaking locked up like a black box you can do NOTHING WITH except look at.
The P800, ofcourse, changes all of that. I'm glad someone finally did some thinking. There are other problems with P800 though, like size, weight and that stylus you will definatly lose ..
I guess the problem is that, if customers can load software into their phones as they like, sonyericsson can not differentiate the products from each other as much as they can now.

jb: yes I would be great if we got a couple of kB to play with on T68
but I guess one of the resons maybe are that it would be difficult with the warranty. But they could take out a fee to get it reseted if you f*ck it up, so that should work.
Ste: sure thing, just mailed a friend that got a linux server up 24/7, waiting for reply.
