> T39 to T39 synchronization via Bluetooth?

I just got a T39, and my buddy has had one for some time but has no other bluetooth devices to sync with -- that is to say, neither of us have ever used it.
When we try to sync the phones (one in discoverable mode and one in discover, or go to pairing and one in receive and one in send), the phones simply fail to find each other. It's as if they're near no other device at all.. and this is when they are inches apart. Anything I can try here, especially to test things out?
I also tried to link them using the tennis game, no luck.

It's possible that one of you may have a defective bluetooth module. I had a problem with bluetooth 2 weeks ago, a master reset fixed the problem. Mind you, a master reset WILL ERASE ALL DATA. So do a BACKUP FIRST.

d'oh.. hope it's not on my brand new (got it yesterday) ebay'd t39..
I'll have to find a neutral Bluetooth device we know works so I can figure out whose phone is acting up.
