i posted this question in my bad hard drive trhread, btu noone awnsered.
i want to install linux. does anyone know any free versions? Wht is your experience with them all, and where can i downlaod them?
I tried Ubuntu, but got some error, and from what i have seen, mandrake costs money. i was thinking about slackware, but couldnt figure otu where to download the ISO...

any help would be greatly appreciated!

i just want linux as a change.... no particular reason...

I've got several free versions of linux sitting on my desk here. I highly recommend trying out a version of linux off of a bootable disk first before you attempt to install linux on your system. Gnoppix and Knoppix are both CD versions one with Gnome and the other KDE (you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out which is which). Ubuntu also has a bootable CD version.

I had a little trouble installing Ubuntu also and I eventually went with Fedora Core 3. Its free and the install discs are easily available as an FTP, HTTP or bittorrent download. Both Ubuntu and Fedora Core are based on Gnome, so if you are looking for a KDE system, you might want to continue looking.

i thought about Fedora Core 3, but something about it made me change my mind. how can i try them out before i install them? i knwo with a live CD, but where can i download a live version for me to burn to a CD etc? i just dont know where to get any of this... sorry for sounding so dumb haha.

There is no Live CD for Fedora Core. Ubuntu I recall downloading from their website and I don't honestly recall where I got Knoppix or Gnoppix from, but I assume I downloaded them because they are burnt on CDs with my writing. Just try typing it in Google and have a careful look around the website.

well i found the website for both Gnoppix and Knoppix. (Gnoppix.org and Knoppix.org haha) but when i click download, and select the mirror and all, there are so many links, and i dont knwo what to download... when i select the mittor... i get all these links...

This is where you start - read those text files first.

Get the latest version available.

In your list, this appears to be: KNOPPIX_V3.8.2-2005-05-05-EN.iso

Use your burner software to write that iso file on a CD/CDRW.

Before you do that, it may be a good idea to check if you downloaded the files correctly by checking the MD5 checksums.

Get a windows MD5 program from http://www.toast442.org/md5gui.shtml

Hmm ... may I suggest you try Ubuntu first? Despite the relative newness of this distro, it has developed a reputation of being very newbie friendly, and is based on Debian - "the rock upon which Ubuntu is built".

Another one to try is MEPIS.

Am not saying that these are the best distros out there. You just have to try around, and find one that suits your needs.

@GOwin, Ubuntu is what i really want to try, but when i downloaded it and burned the ISO, and booted it from the CD, and when i did, everythign went fine for awhile, then i got an alart, and it said something like, "a fatal error has occured, if you continue, the program probobly wont run properly." it didnt say "the program", but it said sumthn like that. should i just try again and re-burn the ISO?? (luckly im using cd-rw's not cd-r's haha)

i also must have messed up when i tried to partition the hard drive when it was installing, ebcuase it deleted windows haha

Ubuntu has a live CD and an installer CD.

Try out the live CD first.

The problem you encountered could be caused by an error during the donwnload process. Check your ISOs with the MD5 checksums.

(And try burning them at lower speeds. Writing at full speed sometimes causes problems for me.)

hahaha i was burning at 4x lol i haev a show cd writer. i downloaded the live version earlier... ill burn that to a CD and try it out real quick. while im doing that, i will check the the iso with the program u gave me...

edit: i forgot windows deleted. so i have to redownload it all...

exactly, gotta do a decent amount of research. I am happy with Fedora Core 3, but I think I would have been happier with Ubuntu. Despite its reputation as being newbie friendly, everyone I know that has tried Ubuntu has had some failure during installation. Mine created all sorts of havoc with the admin and user passwords and I lost the ability to login at all. I tried it a second time, got a different error and moved on.

My only complaint about Fedora Core has been the lack of built in support for NTFS file systems. Other distros have built in NTFS read support. I had patched my kernel to support it, but when I updated my kernel, bye bye NTFS patch.
