Hi, another problem with getting e-mail access on a T68i...

I am trying to set up access to my Talk21 e-mail account.

Irrespective of whether I use GPRS or GSM dial up to a standard POP I always get a "cannot connect to server" error message. I assume it's the connection to the POP or SMTP sever that's failing.

I have tried using both domain names and IP addresses for the POP3 and SMTP servers but neither work:

The servers I have tried are :

in.talk21.com (194.73.242.51) port 112
smtp.o2.co.uk (193.113.160.13) port 25 (O2 is my service provider)

I have managed to access my Talk21 acount from my Pocket PC (HP Jornada), connecting via IR to the T68 and then out on the O2 GPRS connection - so it looks like I'm not far away. Could it be something to do with routing within the O2 APN?

Any help would be appreciated.

Check if O2 will let you access your POP and SMTP servers through their GPRS connection. On Vodafone you have to access via another APN for email and the internet, there is a seperate APN for WAP and the Vodafone WAP Gateway.

I've got it working ! If you're interested this is what I did :

I set up a new GPRS Data account with these settings (type in exactly what's inside the quotes):

APN: "mobile.o2.co.uk"
User id : "username" (this exact text, not any of your own personal usernames)
Password : "password" (this exact text, not any of your own personal passwords)
Passwd request : Off
Allow Calles : Automatic
IP Address : Leave this blank
DNS address : 193.113.200.200
Advanced Setting : go with the defaults

The I set up my e-mail account (under e-mail/options)
Connect using : the grps daat account set up above
Protocol : Pop3
Inc Server : "194.73.242.51" (This is the IP for in.talk21.com)
Incoming Port : 110
Mailbox : my talk21 e-mail account name without the "@talk21.com" bit
Password : The password for the talk21 account
Outgoing Server : 193.113.160.13 (This is the IP for smtp.o2.co.uk)
Outgoing port : 25
E-mail address : My talk21 address including the "@talk21.com" bit
Download : Headers only
From name : First part of my e-mail address
Signature : No Signature
Copy Outgoing : Off
Check Interval : Off

All you have to do it set the account to the one you've set up and then go for "send &receive mail" and it should connect in OK !!!

It all works well when the GPRS connection is reliable - although it seems to struggle sometimes !
