I'm on orange and have traditionally always upgraded to phones that are offically being offered by them.
However, I am now interested in several phones not currently being offered by orange. My first question is quite specific: If I purchase one of these phones and put my Orange sim card in the phone, will I still be able to enjoy Line 2 facility? -I have checked with the manufacturer of the phone in question (Nokia 8800) and they say its a network feature and depends on the network. However, Orange tell me that there is some hardware in the phone that needs to be in place and its not entirely down to the network but the manufacturer as well.

My second question; In general, what are the disadvantages of purchasing a phone other than from your network (i.e. not on contract ) and using your monthly charged sim card? -Obviously cost and perhaps the fact the phone is not as well covered insurance-wise but are there any other disadvantages?

Thanks in adavance.

They're both correct. The phone has to support the feature and your network has to provide it and have it activated on your account.

Generally speaking, many people prefer unbranded phones because they have the 'generic' firmware and there's no network customisation such as start-up screens, wallpapers that you can't delete etc. The generic firmware also means that it's usually easier to flash the phone with new releases of the firmware. A good example is the SE p series, many operator branded phones cannot be updated using the online update service.

So my advice would be to not worry about buying an unbranded phone, you can still get them insured, but just make absolutely sure that the nokia does support ALL of the features that your network provides and you require first.
