Thieves have begun to use bluetooth phones as a way of finding expensive laptops and cellphones in parked cars. Local police claim that 20 recent thefts have been carried out by crooks strolling around with bluetooth enabled phones to find expensive laptops. Police claim that there have been twenty bluetooth thefts.Although how they figured that out is beyond me.

If they dont know what it is (and I know plenty who don't) then surely the B/T wouldn't be switched on? B/T enabled laptops don't switch B/T on by themselves do they?

I don't know how these crooks go about doing this?...it could be just that they are robbing people who are in active use of their equipment or leave it unattended for while or something.Or simply Bluetooth may always be on on their machines without them being aware.

I know that with phones you have to manually turn bluetooth off but when i turn my laptop off, bluetooth also turn's off. How can would be tea leaves detect an expensive laptop via bluetooth if its turned off ?

I dont know. It could either be a case of people leave their laptops switched on for convenience and just turn off the screen to conserve battery power..
Or, the Bluetooth still gives out a signal if the laptop is on or not.
My XDA2 pda still gives out a Bluetooth signal if i leave Bluetooth off but turn the actual device off.

most mobiles and pdas come with the bt turned off and you have to manually switch it on. i'd imagine most laptops are the same. also when the device is off, so is the bt.
however, the real question is why are these people leaving their laptops
switched on in a locked car? don't know about you guys but if i'm driving with my laptop, its switcheed off, in its bag and out of sight.
