I get a free upgrade from Orange soon, and I was thinking of trying out a Nokia 6680 (I know! I can always flog it on ebay!). I've heard you all complaining that the P910 doesn't have EDGE, but this does. What does it actually do? I realise it's a communication tool, but.....

EDGE

Enhanced Data for Global Evolution
A technology that gives GSM the capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony. EDGE provides three times the data capacity of GPRS. Using EDGE, operators can handle three times more subscribers than GPRS; triple their data rate per subscriber, or add extra capacity to their voice communications. EDGE uses the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure, logic channel and 200kHz carrier bandwidth as today's GSM networks, which allows existing cell plans to remain intact.

thanks. So basically its something that no-one will notice 'cos none of the networks use it yet.

A feature to have in a year or so methinks, and not a selling point right now!

I'm interested in hearing more. I know - technically - what edge is, but I'm confused about it's commercial viability.

The way I see is EDGE is 3 times faster than GPRS and about a third the speed of 3G. Or:

GPRS:EDGE:3G = 30mb/s:100mb/s:300mb/s

It would appear from this that 3G is the way to go, BUT all 3G licencees had to pay criminal amounts of money to various governments in order to use the frequency that 3G uses. Now if some other telcom provider - somebody who did not get involved in the 3G gamble - could sneak in and offer EDGE services then they should be on to a winner: As seen above, EDGE uses the same frequencies as GSM so all that required is a handset that supports it (in most cases all the other GSM infrastructure can handle EDGE with perhaps just a software upgrade). Surely the cost of the service should be a small fraction of the 3G cost and this should make up for the slower speed ???

EDGE is data transffer speed between GPRS and UMTS (To cut it short)

Norway has a fairly good EDGE coverage.
Here is a few scetches to show you how NetCom, my network suplier, covers Norway with GSM, EDGE and UMTS:

GSM and GPRS

EDGE

UMTS

As you can see, EDGE covers most parts where UMTS doesn't.
I've never been on EDGE myself but those who has claims that the speed is of data transffer feels closer to UMTS than GPRS.

(Maybe a bit on the side this but I've been working a bit with these systems now and found it relevant (-ish) to the topic.)

Whe I use my phone as a modem to my laptop when I'm away from home or not close to WI FI, I get 115 - 140 kbps when it piggy backs on the EDGE network.

This is better than dial up, which we all know is 56K.

When I download ringtones from WAP, there is no wait time. It is Immediately transferred in 2-3 seconds. I don't know how it has works for others, but on my S710 it is a breeze.
