I personally reccomend BitLord, but anyway, yes you will have to configure it for the best settings.
as it is a P2P (peer to peer) network, it will require alot of people to get a better speed, so as you get more people, or you have a more popular file, you will find the downloads will increase over time.

i use bitcomet as well and its a decent client once set up heres some things to look for-
open bitcomet and click preferences now set your golbal max download speed to about 512kB/s
now set up load to 15 kB/s
next click on connection and uncheck the boxes except dht network (if you have bitcomet .59)
now set max connections to 1000 and connections to keep per task to 500
next set max half-open tcp to 100
close bitcomet and re open now start down loading a torrent after your connected click the box on the left called peers in here is a list of people your connected to you should see the words local and remote.
if you dont let me know as you may have a router that needs configuring
also some torrents have low seeds and high leechers in which case download speeds will be crap regardless of client
i hope these settings help

For Bittorrent u mite need to switch your firewall off because it mite block some of the ports needed, also it also depends on how popular the torrent is.

i use bittornado. generally larger files on bittorrent programs do have slower download speeds, i dont know why, but it just happens like that.

Turbo Torrent is the best Torrent programe avaliable.
and there is now way to drasticaly improve download speeds, it is entirely dependant on the seeders and their upload speeds.
