A low-cost smart phone from Microsoft (code-named Peabody) is nearing completion and will run on the recently released Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, an executive from the software giant said Tuesday.
When the phone platform was first discussed in February, Microsoft planned to aim it at emerging markets such as India and China. But the company has since decided to offer it in all parts of the world, since "everyone is interested in low costs," said Ya-Qin Zhang, corporate vice president at Microsoft's mobile and embedded devices division, during an interview in Taipei.

One might not like Microsoft but I have to acknoledge that they are going to be a tough competitor in the market very soon (as soon as networks support fast and CHEAP data connections). They are good at producing OS (like Windows) and are the only major OS producer actually entering the mobile phone market (where are Apple and Linux when you need them?).
I don't own any smartphone but have had the chance to work with the P800 which I think is a great phone. But looking at its apps I have to say Microsoft offers a lot more (maybe things have changed since?).
MS is going to release, together with unknown producers, a lot of good smartphones. I just think guys at

should take this damn seriously (i.e. releasing some new P series phones) and not just sit and enjoy their success, as it seems to me they are doing now.
The phone market will end up being like the computer market, I am afraid, with Microsoft being ubiquitous and a lot of minor brands releasing cheap phones. Sony, Nokia and the other will be put in a corner. (also because of pressure from the operators which are likely to get higher margins promoting unknown phone makers).
What saved big companies up to know are the high R&D investments required to produce features such as tiny 2mpx cams, color screens and all that stuff. Once every manufacturer will be able to produce them it will be up to the OS of the phone and what it enables people to do. And Microsoft will have an edge there, and I think no one can honestly dispute it.
