Freedom2Surf (www.freedom2surf.net), has today announced that it will be one of the first ISPs to offer consumers super-fast broadband services at speeds of up to 24Mbit. Freedom2Surf’s new 8Mbit and 24Mbit services, will be up to 48 times faster than standard broadband packages, allowing consumers to experience a completely new range of services such as Internet TV.

Freedom2Surf is today launching its 8Mbit Connect Package which will be immediately available from just £14.99 a month. This new service will initially be available in 14 exchanges in major metropolitan areas, with the number of exchanges increasing to over 200 from end of July 2005 and nationwide by the end of the year. Customers on Freedom2Surf.s existing 2Mbit Connect Packages will be able to upgrade to the 8Mbit by paying a one-off £15 regrade fee depending on their local exchange capability.

Broadband at speeds of greater than 8Mbit will enable UK consumers to revolutionise the breadth and depth of services which they can receive through their Internet connection. As well as significantly faster downloads of music and video files, ultra-fast broadband will enable consumers to take advantage of Internet TV (IP-TV) services which are set to launch in the second half of the year.

Consumers will be able to access services allowing them to purchase films and music videos on a pay-per-play basis, with the potential to transform home entertainment. A number of content providers are expected to take advantage of ultra-fast broadband to challenge the dominance of players such as Sky, Telewest, NTL and Home Choice.

Chris Panayis, managing director of Freedom2Surf, commented: “.Consumers across Europe and the US have long enjoyed ultra high-speed broadband and we are committed to leading the broadband speed revolution in the UK. The promise of Local Loop Unbundling is finally delivering, and consumers as a result will be able to enjoy 24Mbit broadband for the same price as many are paying for bog standard 1Mbit services.”

Chris Panayis continued: “We are expecting to see the launch of a number of new broadband-content services including Internet TV during 2005, and super-speed broadband will allow users to turn their Internet connection into a complete entertainment gateway for their home.”

but will many web sites actually be able to deliver that kind of performance to actually make paying for a 24mbit line worth while? the net is often slow enough even on a 1 or 2 mbit connection

its ok have a fast connection but if the sites you visit have poor performing servers then there really isn't much point I guess

I just signed up for 8mbit last week and am interested to see how that compares in the real world to the 1mbit I've been using

you will probably only have use for 24Mbit when using peer-to-peer downloading, gaming or something like that...

here in Sweden it has been possible since april last year to have 24Mbit access via the phone line...
