When I open the shutter the camera screen pops up for about a second then goes back to the main menu. If I go to the main menu and select the camera icon, the screen flashes and then returns to the main menu.

What have I missed as it used to work?

well looks like a malfunctioning peice here.. try common remedies like restarting the phone, if that doesnt help then restting to factory defaults etc.. if nothing works, you might have to take it to the service center.

This phone is only a day old and was a replacement with the new firmware!

Shut off and restart your phone. I had a similar problem with video mode, which was solved by simply restarting the phone. The problem never came back. This message was posted from a WAP device

When the camera screen comes up, the symbols indicate it's on high quality video mode. I've tried taking the battery out but this makes no difference.

this actually happened to my K700i a day or two ago, take out the battery whilst the phone is on, so it resets it and then turn on phone again after replacing the battery

I've just checked the firmware on the phone and it's still the original. This replacement was supposed to have the updated firmware to fix the bugs!

I had the same problem yesterday and I tried taking the battery out, doing a full settings reset and even a master reset and nothing helped.

Tried again a few hours later and its working fine again.

No idea what the problem was or how it resolved itself.

It sounds as if this problem is firmware related somehow. With R1A, I sometimes had problems with the camera displaying a white screen, but since having R1J, I haven't had any problems.
