Having a problem with a cousin's PC, which is using gay-OL, and I want to check if the problem persists in a different browser. It's a slow PC though (p3-?, 64mb ram), so no shot at installing xp, and apprently firefox doesn't work with 98 - I installed it, but the PC acts as though it's not there. Is therre something free I can download for testing purposes? Fwiw, the problem is that she can't play Pogo.com games; either the gay-OL browser fails to initiate java (~75% of the time) or it does, but takes 5-10 full minutes to load the game, which even on such a slow computer is way too long, far longer than it used to take.

FireFox should work on on Win98, I've tested it with a PIII 500Mhz laptop with 64Mb RAM and it works ok, albeit rather slowly!

The fact that it doesn't work on your cousins PC, along with the Java problem sounds like it might be windows itself that's not working correctly.

Have you tried installing the latest sun or microsoft java runtime enviroment? This might get Pogo working, but I think that you might be looking at a reinstall in truth.

One other thing, is it Windows 98 Second Edition? Lots of software doesn't work properly under First Edition.

Edit: AOL browser and connectivity services are very resource hungry. The slow java initialisation might just be because the PC is working very hard. Do a google for 'process explorer', download the Win9x version (it's a small file) and run it. It'll show you in real time exactly what's going on, rather like XP's ctrl-alt-delete task manager only much better
