My inquisitive and curious nature leads me to quest for the whys and wherefores when dealing with the various types of GPRS connections for mobile phones. Most things, I've gotten sorted, but there remains a few things which I am unsure that I have understood correctly. If any of you techies out there could set me straight, I'd greatly appreciate it!

The issue that concerns me is that of APNs, more precisely the differences between them. Now, an APN is an access point into the GPRS network, right? And the APN "translates" the data to and from the format common to the GPRS network, and the format used to send the data from the phone to the APN. Correct so far?

An MMS APN is used for MMS messages (obviously), translating between whatever format the data can be most effectively sent from the phone to the APN, and the common GPRS format.

A WAP APN is used for WAP traffic. Intended for slow phone-APN connections, as the amount of data passed is very low.

An Internet APN is just about the same as a WAP APN, except it's more data-heavy (meaning a faster phone-APN connection is required, but more elaborate pages can be downloaded).

Am I way off? Or have I managed to get things (almost) straight?

Thanks!

Thanks!

I've been lurking the board for a while, and figured nothing less than a Grand Entry would suffice. Glad to hear I didn't botch it by sounding like a blubbering idiot!

I've just switched from Nokia (yes, shame on me, I know) to and I'm wondering why I didn't before. I find to be superior to Nokia in every aspect.

Well, I happen to be one of those people who feel infinitely embarassed if I ask a question that has already been answered.

I must be weird or something.

If I am right in saying that an Internet APN is just a "beefier" WAP APN, is there any reason why one would want to use the WAP one at all if your phone supports Internet APNs? Apart from the fact that surfing through WAP APNs is probably cheaper, seeing as how less data is passed.
