> mp4 can't be played in my k500i

recently i downloaded some video clips which were in .mpg format and converted them to .mp4 format using IMtoo 3gp converter. when i transferred it 2 my phone it gave a message saying, "it can't played back".
after that using the same tool i converted it to3gp format, the video quality was very poor.
what is the difference b/w 3gp and mp4 and which is better?
plz help
