I've bought a P900 that is UK Orange-branded. And I hate it...
(Not the phone, oh no, I love the phone! just not the #@£%$ orange-crud!)
After searching a bit and reading up some on how the SEUS (update-service of SonyEricsson) works, this is what I've concluded with:

Reading logs and info on this forum I found that the SE-software checks your IMEI, sends it to the server, the server tells the the update-program which software belongs together with your phone.
Mine is (unfortunately) one that belongs together with CDA162004/3.
Now, to get the cell unbranded, or even update a P900 to a P910a is easy. IN THEORY.

Ask someone who has the software you're after to tell you his IMEI, use som PBB-program (ie, http://www.se-nse.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=191 ), change the IMEI of your phone (it might not like your SIM-card after that, but this is only momentarily), go to the SEUS, manual update, type in some CDA-version.
(Number really doesn't matter, this is just a check to see if there is an update for that CDA-software, if you forget what version you have, just type CDA162003/5)
Then you are go!

As soon as the phone has been updated etc, you use the PBB software once again and set your phone back to your original IMEI.
If there's any problem with your phone not liking your SIM-card after that then just run PBB and go to Repair --> Reset GDFS.

It doesn't matter really if the IMEI is from a stolen or crushed/broken phone, just as lone as it belongs to a P900/P910i that goes with the software you want.

And voilá, you now have a phone that is unbranded!

I did try this, but all I have is the IMEI of a T68-phone... :-/
And then it said that there is no updated software for my phone.
Well, at least it confirms the theory, beacuse otherwise it says I already have the latest software for my phone...

PS. Does anyone have any IMEI that goes with the P900-->P910a software? I'd do anything for that!

Yes, very interesting indeed. I'd be a bit cautious of trying this on my personal phone though just in case, but it's certainly worth trying on a p910 with firmware probs. Any one selling one (very) cheap?

Hmmm... Someone was as kind as to give me an IMEI to try it out.
...it didn't work.
From the log (in Program Files --> SE --> Update S --> log) I can see that there's some other program double-checking the phone. And when that pops up with the "wrong" (or well, actually right) IMEI it stops.
It says there is an unknown error.
So the guys at SE already predicted this. Darn it!

excerpt from log:

21.15.15:647 2 Info Received 3 (by) homeflash.msconnector.ib
21.15.32:694 3 Info Device IMEI number: 35196500211xxx (by) homeflash.jd
21.15.34:241 4 Info Battery: +CBC: 0,100 (by) homeflash.jd
21.15.34:788 5 Info Turn Off: (by) homeflash.jd
---
21.16.42:429 91 Info IMEI: 35196500371xxx (by) homeflash.ae
21.16.42:429 92 Exception FatalException homeflash.pe

(then it stops, telling me there's an unknown error. But I bet the SE-guys knows excactly what error this is... )

Well, it's a step in the right direction at least. Now, if there just was some way of either fooling the software into getting my "fake" IMEI, or, even better, downloading the firmware of my choice, thinking it is the one it wants, and programming it.
Latter one shouldn't be that difficult. If one could find out of where these images are stored...
(my log says on programming:
03.19.42:285 90 Info Searching: HL1_pg_P900CDA162004/3OrangeUK_f_040812_1144_6 (by) homeflash.jd
so this file has to be downloaded from somewhere...)

What I'm saying is this:
Download the files for the software you want. Put it in a folder. Run SE Update. Let it download what it wants. Whilst he's doing the large file, overwrite the other files with the files you want. Last you overwrite the PDA-file with an unbranded one.
Yes, he does a file-check (they're not stupid, these SE-guys), BUT from what I can read from the log-file there is a pause between the signature-check and the programming of the phone.
So in theory it should be possible to ruin the phone...

Either that or, safer, find some way of fooling the programming into taking this other IMEI...

I'll get on it. But not now. Now I have to go to work.
I love working nighttimes...
