I am trying to use my T68 as an IrDA modem. I've done all the settings according to the Voicestream website, had them checked twice by two different VStream techs and the same problem persists.
Once the connection is established (I can get only this far) when I try to get a web page to download on my PDA I wait forever and nothing happens. Sometimes if I wait long enough I get a message on my PDA saying Page Does Not Exist Check Your Settings. The funny thing is that when I finally disconnect the internet connection, my phone tells me that it has sent an X number of bytes and it has received an X number of bytes. In other words something is coming through, I just can't see it.
Any ideas anyone? I live in New Orleans LA.
Thanks

The following is taken from the VStream website, with my modifications. In the end I'll point out those mods.
Configuring the PDA
1. To set up a Dial-up connection for your GPRS connection: tap Start then Settings.
2. Tap Connections tab.
3. Tap Connections icon.
4. From the Internet drop down box select Internet Settings and tap Modify.
5. Tap New.
6. Enter a name for your GPRS connection.
7. From the Select a Modem drop down select Generic IrDA Modem .
8. Set the Baud Rate to 57600 and tap Advanced.
9. Tap on the Named Servers tab. Select the ‘Use specific server addresses’ radio button.
10. Enter the iStream DNS addresses into the DNS and Alt DNS fields, then tap OK. The DNS is 216.155.175.105. Alt DNS is 216.155.175.106.
11. Tap Next.
12. In the Phone Number box enter *99***2# for VStream purchased T68
14. Tap Next.
15. Untick the ‘Wait for dial tone before dialling’ check box, tap Finish.
16. Tap Proxy Settings.
18. Check This Network Connects to the Internet
19. Check This Network Uses a Proxy Server
20. In the Proxy Server field enter getmorespeed.voicestream.com
21. Tap Advanced
22. Change the HTTP port to 8080
23. Tap OK
24. Tap OK
25. Tap the Dialing Locations tab.
26. Make sure the Area Code and Country Code fields are left Blank.
19. Tap the Dialing Patterns tab.
27. Enter G for Local Calls.
28. Enter G for Long Distance Calls.
29. Enter G for International Calls.
30. Tap Ok.
31. Tap Ok.
32. Close the Settings Box.
Making the connection
1. On the device tap Start, Settings then the Connections tab.
2. Tap the Connections icon, select the new GPRS connection and tap Connect.
3. The phone will now display Connecting.
My modifications were the adding of the DNS and Alt DNS servers and the proxy server. I searched the web for possible solutions and I came accross a page that explained it in detail. I tried it and it worked.
BTW, under TCP/IP, Use S-ware Compression and Use IP Header Compression can be checked or unchecked. It doesn't affect the speed. Also the baud rate you can set it to whatever you want, that won't affect the speed either.
So there... hope I was able to help a few frustrated folks
