My phone was towards the end of it's initial warranty when it was replaced with a new one with a recent production date. Does it mean my warranty is "extended" to 15 months after this production date?

it depends... swap units can be reconditioned phones... you can see if it's a reconditioned phone if it has a R-number on the label, for example R2103P (meaning it has been reconditioned in year 2002 week 10). A reconditioned phone only have 3 month warranty of service... But if you are lucky there isn't any R-number, then it's the 15 month warranty of production.

Hi Cytech thanks for the info. It seems they gave me a brand-new unit it says "02W09". So does it mean that I have week 9, 2002 +15 months more warranty left? That's great news! My "initial" warranty should've ended already....
So, should I be needing this "warranty of production" do I just bring it to a service point? Are the service people aware of this? Frankly I didn't even know this kind of warranty even existed....

yeah... if it doesn't have any R-number it means you have warranty to week 21 next year
Shouldn't be any problem if you have to leave it for service either since they check the productiondate...

cytech - this warranty of production date thing is interesting. is it practiced only in europe?
here in singapore, they don't look at the production date for warranty period calculation. they use the warranty card that comes with the phone and warranty period is 1 year from the date of purchase on the card. if you lose the warranty card, they won't honour the warranty even if you had previously sent in your phone for repair in which case they should be able to trace from their records the original purchase date.

think it should be a global thing... this 15 month warranty of production is a deal

has with their servicepoints... but maybe they have different deals in different parts of the world...
