My contract is due to finish at the start of Aug. I was thinking of gettin the W800 but was waiting for it to come out and get initial impressions.
Mu question is; Do you have to do all this retentions, wheeler-dealer stuff before the contract has ended or can you do it after (is there a deadline after which you're signed up automatically for another year?)

no run out time. you can wait as long as you want.
The 12 month contract thing you signed for is a commitment to pay for 12 months minimum you can let it run on even more if you wish to.
I am in the same situation as you and my contract ends on 12august but i will be waiting to try and get a good deal on the w800 so i will wait maybe another month and then ring to see the offers

They won't better the Select 500 deal, so a free phone is all Im hoping for!

According to the newest CPW mag (which i picked up today) it will be free on orange if your tarrif is £30 or over, and it will be released on aug 12th. But there is still no official news from SE or Orange on the matter

I waited till the 13th month of my contract for my free K750i upgrade. Around months 11-12 they were asking silly money and they had freezing issues with the handset anyway (no probs whatsoever with freezing now).
