Hi...

I managed to get the memory stick recognised and working... however when I go to the phone status it says that there are only 477meg free space... yet it has just been formatted.

I can understand a few meg less than the stated 512... but 35MB missing?! Can this be the norm?

No, Its because of bits bytes are measured in clusters of 8s not 10s, thats why the maximum you get on a 512Mb card is 468Mb

the hardware of memory stick is count as 1MB = 1,000,000 KB
while the software part is count as 1MB = 1,024,xxx KB
