@gardar
This phone is not an ipaq and I'm glad it isn't, because you realise that without a way to access the phone and a way to reset it without login, you disencourage thiefs from stealing it from you and other persons are "encoraged" to try to find the owner.
People that find an ipaqs don't think twice. They reset it and in 10 seconds become theirs.

This same error happened to me recently !
Lucky me it was not a bootable application.
I decompiled the .sys and found out that the application used a library called mobinfo. I found it in the net and installed it and everything was fixed.
I know you can not install anything, but if you could I would recommend try to install this library.

Ahhh, I've read that mobinfo is often the culprit behind the 'not found' message elsewhere, so now you've suggested this too, LAU, I may install it when I get the phone back -- thanks!

I guess my concern is that it's actually possible to get the phone into this state though. I don't know *which* application caused this problem, so I could well end up with precisely the same issue in future, again requiring the phone to disappear off for a few weeks to Celestica (I presume they're the service centre that SE will recommend to me, as they were for my old T68).

I would agree that there are security advantages to making a hard reset difficult. However, it should be possible to start the phone in a sort of 'safe mode', which loads only system critical files at startup. It's a little silly to have the ability to install 3rd party applications if you play Russian roulette each time you do so, running the risk of having to send the phone off to a service centre!

It'll be interesting to see if Celestica try to charge me to get the phone back to a working state. I've had bad experiences with them in the past -- they took between 2 and 4 weeks just to do a firmware upgrade on my T68 -- but I don't know of other service centres that I can use (I'm in Cambridge)...

Well, someone else can reset my ipaq and delete almost everything. But its useless if they want to steal it because they won't be able to use it as its locked. Only my fingerprint can unlock it

I think the only way is to bring it to se service center, Do you still remember your firmware?

I think the problem is not the 3rd party software, I think the firmware is the main culprit. mine also did that so they change the phone with the latest firmware available r4a10, so far its very stable. i even install all the software I installed before and its still ok.

@ersatz0906: Thanks very much for your message. Interesting to hear that it might be a firmware issue: certainly it seems odd for any 3rd party software to be loading quite so early, and causing quite such a problem. The tricky thing, I suspect, is that I've got a Vodafone branded phone and, though the firmware version appears to be quite old, the website says that there's no newer version available. From what I can see from other posts on here, that's because the network-branded firmware tends to lag waaay behind the non-branded firmware -- is my understanding of that correct?

It's good to have some extra info -- I appreciate your response

i think some auto start application from your memory stick crash your phone from start up.

It happens to me few days ago and a full format on memory stick and the problem solved

@hyperken: If only I could do this too -- in my case the problem appears to be with an application on the internal, rather than the external, drive ) Anyway, SE have agreed that it needs to be reset at the service centre -- we shall see what happens! Thanks for all the advice, folks...

Stuart.

I have a good rule to install everything on my memory stick and nothing on the interal memory... Then I never have any problems, because I can allways remove the memory stick...
