The differences are because manufacturers quote unformated sizes, when the card is formatted some space is lost in filesystem overheads (little bits of data that are used by the operating system to let it know what files are where etc).

I think the manufacturers mostly quote unformatted sizes because 1gb sounds better than 960 mb but they would probably argue that they don't know how you're going to format the card and different file formats will have different overheads

Hope this helps

Also
Manufacturers quote 1gb for 1000mb not the true 1024mb

Different makes of 1gig cards will be different in available memory. Ie Sony memory sticks may have more than say iomega or someone else. This is due to memory cache(ing) Its best to buy sony ones i think as they have been designed for use with sony products therefore being 100% compatible.

Hope this helps

One person hit it on the head, for probably 20 years, propage devices have advertised size based on the 1000 byte to meg instead of 1024. This will never change. Just divide advertised size by 1024 and multiply by 1000, you now know the true max size, and filesystem overhead takes some. This message was posted from a T610

...why do they need that much space its not fair

The amount of space used is proportional to the size of the storage device, think how complicated it is to keep track of all the files stored on a 2gig card and losing 50 mb isn't that bad.. Formatting one of the new 500 gig hard drives loses you 35GB!

A further question: does anyone know about limitations on the maximum memory a particular phone model can handle?

There are OS-related design limitations; I've had SmartMedia card devices (non-phone) that could only handle up to 64MB and I only found out after buying some 128MB blanks - they couldn't be formatted or even recognised.

Is there anything like this with MemoryStick and SE phones?

I think it should be 1050 so that the usable memory is 1gb

1GB is actually 1024MB but when formatted no memory card actually has the full 1024mb.
