The icon Normaly means that the network has destricted the there services.
The first thing you need to do i try the sim cards in a other phone, this will let you know if there is a problem with them, If they work you will need to speak to the network and ask them if they have any problems or if the phone you purchased is blocked for any reason.
If they say they dont have any problems, you will need to return the phone to a service center for them to investigate.
I have had this problem before when I was in USA (Florida) On orange.
At Random i had this symbol on my phone and the phone redused to do anything. I tried all the networks and come up with the same problem, however the symbol used to come and go. In the eng i contacted Orange who informed me that a cable had been cut in the atlantic and some customers are having this problem. They said the fault would be intermittenent (which it was) but there was very little they could do. Any way I was still able to use the phone but at certain times when the symbol has gone.

I bought the phone off this guy my father-in-law works with. I guess this guy works for a phone shop?? No clue, but I got the phone off of him. Everyone else buys their phones off this same guy, but the phones seem to be OK, everyone else's is working fine.
I put in my father-in-law's Orange sim in my phone, and i got the same Inactive SIM sign. But it's working fine on his phone. I put my o2 in his phone, and he said it seemed to work fine in his phone.. but maybe I'll try one more time on my husband's phone.
So I don't know I think it's a problem with my phone as the orange sim i put in wasn't working in my phone but it was working on father-in-law's phone.

I've got a horrible feeling that your phone has been reported lost or stolen. It looks like the network has locked it down.
Heard of this happening when buying from eBay. Someone sells their new phone, then reports it lost or stolen. Seller is quids in with the money from the original sale and a brand new phone. The buyer, unfortunately, is left with nothing more than a paperweight.

That's terrible! I have no clue what to do now

If that's the case this phone is absolutely useless to me, and anyone else for that matter and that's 150 pounds lost and gone to waste.

See if you or your dad can get in touch with the guy it was bought off. It could be this guy's pulled a fast one and reported it lost/stolen to claim on the insurance or something!

My mother in law's phone was bought from the same guy and now her phone is doing the exact same thing mine is doing. No doubt this is some scam.
Is there any way at all we can have our phones unlocked? I don't think it would be any use to contact the person who sold us the phone.
If not I'll have to get a new phone but I'm livid.

Yours and your moms phone is blocked/barred from all UK operators (02 orange...) I wont work in UK, there no way to unlock it. The guy that is selling you the phones, is selling stolens phones. The choice you got is to sell to to someone outside of the UK or return it to its provider (O2 Orange...) If you want to sell it, I can buy them from you.
