You can actually make a call, turn down the volume completely while in the call, end it then take a picture. This is for firmwares that do not support silent mode cameras.
The alternative (cheaper) method is to just use your fingers to close the speakers when taking a picture, hence muffling the sound.

The only way to take a photo with no sound is to call your voicemail, while the call is on, press 'More', 'Minimize', and then open the camera lens and take a shot.

I just open the shutter and it starts the camera automatically, no need to minimise first.
