Cheers for the help...... googled SUN, found the java download and tried again.
Exactly the same result.
I've emailed SE Support from their site in a last vain attempt.
And I'd come so far ..........

check ....\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\log\[mySEUSlog.log]
This file logs all the events during an update
You can delete it, and the updater will create a new one (easier to find what you want), or you can just scroll down (check date and time for confirmation).
Then check what's logged there, maybe you can conclude something.
