You would also have to rotate lid to fit it in hole, if it weren't round.

Now think how heavy that steel lid is...

a circle is also the shape that allows the lid to be manufactured from the smallest amount of material and still permit a person to fit through the hole.

"That would depend on what kind of a triangle it is... An equilateral one may not fall in....but others could"

That's what I was referring to. An Equi triangle.

distance between a tip to its opposite side and a tip to another tip are the farthest distances on the Equi tri. Both of them won't fit through the hole.

Any triangle will fall through on its largest edge(s). This message was posted from a K700i

Wow, an entire thread for just 1 question.

I know of 4 practical reasons 2 of which were mentioned already.

1. It's easy to cover & uncover it - you don't have to position it properly.
2. The cover will not fall into the hole because the diameter of the cover is always larger than the diameter of the hole in any orientation.
3. The circular shape is more efficient as it gives a larger opening for a given area compared to other shapes.
4. Round shaped covers are easier to move around by simply rolling it.

1 more thing.
round sheped lid is more resistant to torsion force than tri/quadrangular.
