My original time of 3 hours for the update included the time to perform the update & the restore of the phone backup.

The update is a f...ing charade!I just can't get to it.Every time i make one step forward i take two steps back.

This time it reached till the point where the update wizard starts!

So it starts downloading the update succesfully and then when starting to initiate the update it says "error can not connect to the device"!

WTF?

I mean the devise is on the syncstation. It is switched off as stated. And it just won't connect, seriously who do i have to f around here to get my humble update for petes sake?

Seriously i even flashed firmwares on dct3 nokias when it was considered elite and hax0r to do so,and nowadays with all this giant steps to technology and i just can't get it done!

I've done this a few times in the past and - for me - the total time for this process is always in the order of 3 hours. A lot of that time is for the data restore. Before I start, I always do these first:

1) Make sure the battery is fully charged
2) Install the latest java client on your PC before starting. Get this from www.java.com
3) If you (still) have Powerpoint installed in RAM (you may have got it from the CD that came with the phone or installed from the SE website) remove it - BEFORE you do your backup
4) Take the opportunity to remove any unwanted apps or files. The restore process is very slow and some apps take a long time to copy back - anything with lots of files such as Avant Go, mail, etc. The less you have, the faster everything will be. Any removed apps can be reinstalled after everything is done.
5) Do a full backup (I mean it!)
6) Remove the Memory stick
7) Using the hidden service menu, format your internal memory.
Use Microsoft IE when connected to the Sony Ericisson website. Other browsers do work, but this one always works
9) Disable Firewalls if possible
10) Close all tasks on your PC before doing the upgrade - IE should be the only thing running.
11) Go to the SE site & do the ugrade (do what you are told!)
12) Replace the Memory Stick & do a restore

My CDA is 162005/3. When the R5A02 update came out at the end of May, I asked SE for the "Release Notes" and got this response:

- SIM-AT problem STK messages do not remain in display
- Sonofon GPRS problem
- Incorrect time for Jamaica, Montego Bay
- Summertime does not change the clock in Lebanon and Jordan.
- Time setting for Hyderabad (Pakistan) is incorrect

Being suitably unimpressed with this and combined with the reports that R5A02 "broke" Blackberry, I didn't bother upgrading. What about R5B01 for my phone? Does anybody out there have any comments of the benefits of this update? Or should I spend the 3 hours doing something important with my life, like watching TV?
