I like the chatroom idea. I'm wondering why no one has created a chatroom for SE owners in the past. Chatrooms offer more interaction, and would defenitely lessen the burden of the site.

But there is another effect if ever a chatroom is made; the site might lose it's current audience. what do you guys think?

I dont get this: a 512MB RAM costs $126 where as a 1GB RAM costs $1,443 ?? Can't you insert two of the 512 ones in two different slots of the server?

I am ready to chip in for a small donation if it will keep the forum up and running.

@Wings_Talons: I think the problem is that the slots are already full so the only option would be to use 1GB DIMMs.

The chat room would be really cool, but we would lose the ability for others to benifit in the future from the information being exchanged.

How about this idea: If the number of posts being indexed, queried, and accessed could be reduced, the memory profile (and disk cache) of the forum application would be much, much smaller. Why not take the oldest posts/threads and either remove them altogether or move them into a separate archive where they wouldn't be included in the regular database queries? It seems that would help a lot...

old posts have loads of info in.. if only people used search more, and stopped posting even more repeat questions

@MixiN: Old posts have tons of info, but with 11199 topics and 140895 posts on the boards, I really can't imagine that there is much info in the oldest posts that isn't ALSO in some of the newer posts (for the very reason you mentioned) It would just be getting rid of the oldest reapeat questions...

Ditto on wishing people would use search more!

Yeah, Sisyphus indeed. And this boulder is bloody huge.

Wish we could go and delete some of our own junk posts. That would save your time and effort. How about allowing everyone with >500 posts the opportunity to do that?

I mean sometimes the replies are something like just "hmmm..." Better to get rid of such stuff.

Hmm...
About the voluntary donations part...
Have you heard of that little PayPal thingy?
I have seen a lot of those on sites which require donations and such...
I would gladly chip in to prevent the site I visit the most from going down!
Wonder if that helps?
