You actually see Alcatel quite often in Germany as well, usually the free one you get for signing up...

Lucent, motorola, ericsson, alcatel and so on, even nokia, suffers from this. Telecommunications is changing. The industry is restructuring and the huge traditional telecom companies are facing extinction unless they are able to adapt. And that's what they are trying to do.
Life is harsh.

Matsushita is analogous to panasonic, as far as I know. Exactly how that relation works I'm not sure of. Panasonic is probably just an international brand name.
