yes, but people keep giving generalisations like that without giving actual reasons as to why the P series is better (for you), which really doesnt help him to make his decision

please give some specifics as to why you say one is better than the other, and in what situations etc etc, then I can at least counter those points:-) or even, maybe, agree!

i will have a go

Symbian was designed to be a phone from the start, now im not saying that makes it better but it is definitely the logical way to go.
If you need your device to be a phone first.
i.e
batt (dont start saying my imate last two days or other stuff like that as i use both and my p will last a good 5 days as a phone. ( notice the PHONE bit please )

so as a conclusion i think the p series IS a much better Phone .

Now to the pda part yes you are right i think WM does have more power than SYM based phones due to the prossesors the programs and so on but that is not to say that they are better at it.

I remember an old comarison between a bbc micro and a pentium based pc both running word processor software and yes the pc had a spell check/grammar and so on but in all test was slower than the bbc micro at doing the job at hand.

I Know that the p990 will do every job your WM based phone will do how fancy it does or how fast it does it doent make it any worse at doing it

so as a pda conclusion if you have a job that needs to be done and thats it go for WM it will probebly do it faster and fancy-er .
but if that job has to be done again tommorow without charging and so on go for the p990 because at least you will still have your phone.
at the end.

example
If i wanted to watch a film i would choose the WM but if i wanted to watch the full serise of the lord of the rings and still have a phone then it has to be the P

FINAL CONCLUSION
For me and my usage it has to be the p ( it will always get me out of trouble )

STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!! hehe
Do not get the k-jam if your thinking about watching videos or any sort of vedio that is, i bough one purely for entertainment only, mp3 was good but when it came to watching vedios it was choppy and sometime you lost a sound although i converted the vedio for Pocket PC and the video stopped too, its the lack of CPU man it is 195Mhz only . so operating the media (Windows Media) was slow. So i gave mine back in 10 days after i bought it, and noooooooo regrets at all, i felt cool afterwards .

Take my word for it, if you want somethink small and powerfull go for the I-mate Jam thats one small powerfull bunny than the k-jam, the k-jam should be ashamed of it self.

massuer is probably cursing me now are yah?

Good things come to those who wait.
If you like the P-series stay with it. Otherwise with the msm devices you will just have the feeling of another computer at the end of the day.

yes yes yes, i will recommend the p990 over the k-jam anytime, i'll write my name on it. dont get me wrong the k-jam was good but not for entertainment its just rediculous slow, it will spoil your viewing pleasure , like pirate films do.

mmm one point i was tempted to get the Archos av500 the screen quality on that was nothink like it i ever seen on a pocket media player, screen quality was better than my TV or computer if that makes sense.

Sorry people but I got it. Its been ok so far but odd. I will give the media a go and see what happens. Cheers for the opinions. I will get the P Series as well if it proves as good as it sounds.

If you need your device to be a phone first.

this is a common argument and was true of early pocketpc implementations of phone functionality, but pocketpc redesigned from the ground up and thence renamed to windows mobile with the specific reason being that it would be used to a larger extent in phone form.

I've mentioned a few times that I use my k-jam extensively. This includes at least 2 hours a day browsing, also checking email automatically every 15 minutes, endless calls, contact look ups, a few games etc etc and I'm still left with 70-75% battery remaining. The k-jam processor is by far the best for performance vs power saving in the market on any similar device and doing the same work on my jasjar when I had it I would be lucky to have 20% battery left

IMHO the WM PDA syncs much better with outlook and on the device itself provides better functionality for finding your data be it contacts, notes etc etc

I'm not sure WM does it any fancier than the P series but it does make look up easier and offers multiple ways from the phone functionality of finding your contact, for example

I've said it a hundred times that I really don't understand this fascination of endless days between charges. How many of us don't go home every night and stick our phone on a cradle or equivalent to both sync and charge the device. If I didn't do that my PDA and PC would be well out of sync after a couple of days. If I am travelling I always have a sync/charge cable with me so its still a non issue.

I don't understand that unfortunately as they both provide the same functionality in regards to watching a movie and answering calls, well, except that the k-jam has a larger screen for less squinty viewing

fair enough, I do think that most P series users would stick to P990 due to familiarity but I'm waiting to see just how familiar the UIQ 3 really is, or if there is a learning curve that would also be there if one switched to a WM device

I don't know what you used to convert your videos but using the software I mentioned earlier, even going back as far as my ipaq 5450 and 4150, I have never experienced the problems you describe there. It really does come down to the converting software I am sure

@Mad_Bob, glad to see you're giving it a go. I'm keeping a total open mind about the P990 and with the obvious comparisons going on in this thread and also the other symbian vs windows mobile thread I think it will be interesting to do the comparison

its actually a 200mhz processor in some wizard variations but i-mate chose to slow it to 195mhz for more stabilty and even better battery power. However, in my thread where I compared the k-jam and the jasjar I found they performed fairly equally though the k-jam battery life is far far superior. The k-jam is very snappy (I'd be interested in how you feel it performs Mad_Bob) and is definitly no worse than my old JAM
