Give it time and they might be a serious threat. SE are seeing tremendous growth, but the next thing will be brand and reputation. A lot of people will be looking to switch to the 'next big thing', if only because they've become bored with each new Nokia being essentially the same (although the new Series 40 and 60 interfaces will inject a little new life). Looking at how many people have K750i's proves that people are making the change already, and I also see a lot of W800i's and W550i's (but not a W900i as yet!).
Of course, the same will then happen to SE in time. It happens in any industry. It may even happen to Apple and the iPod!!
The success of the WALKMAN phones could be a blessing for Sony Ericsson, and indeed Sony, and if they do things right (including making some decent standalone players) then they could do a lot of harm to the iPod.

Good news, and if the W810 is a sign of things to come then 2006 should be equally headline making. They have wiped the floor with the competition as far as music-phones are concerned - very well marketed.

Market shares dropped from 7% to 6.9%
have really big problems produsing phones in big volumes!!!
had almost no phones in the shops during the chrismas holidays and I belive that hurt sales a lot :/
I hope the new factory in china will help. Also I would like to see some manufacturing in sweden again.
This have been a problem since the start with
every phone. I hope they calculate things right for the p990 and the k750 successor so that there are phones out in the market during the whole year.

the quarter report season is not over so where on earth did we found news about SE having a drop in market share?
or is it refer to comparison of q2 with q3?
btw, when samsung is having a far in profit margin even with higher sales and most of the market analyst is not expecting nokia to have good profit margin
the result from SE is enormous!!! in fact reuters have report it beat all market consensus target...this is second time in a row tht SE manage to beat market expectation on their profit.
I just hope they keep on beating the profit margin.....because only with more profit tht they have more $ to invest and produce design with is cutting edge just like they used to during the glory days of E///.

@c96sthl: It refers to the comparison of Q3 and Q4 based on se's own estimations of the total market.

STOCKHOLM, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Sony Ericsson, the world's fifth-biggest mobile phone maker, said on Wednesday it had a record fourth quarter and reported profits ahead of forecasts on the back of demand for handsets with cameras and music players.
The firm, owned by Sweden's Ericsson (ERICb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research) and Japan's Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), said it expected total industry sales to rise around 10 percent in 2006 from its estimate of 780 million phones in 2005 and to be able to maintain profit margins.
The market forecast was in line with one from the world's third largest player, Samsung (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research), last week.
"The fourth quarter witnessed very strong sequential market growth which Sony Ericsson matched, resulting in a record quarter in terms of volume, sales and net income," the group said in a statement.
The quarter and whole second half of 2005 has been buoyed by sales of a 2-megapixel camera phone and the Walkman phone, based on Sony's brand of portable music players.
Fourth-quarter pretax profit rose to 206 million euros ($249 million), up from 140 million a year ago and ahead of the average forecast of 173 million given in a Reuters poll of 20 analysts.
That took the company's total profit for the year to 514 million euros, up from 486 million in 2004.
However, the news failed to lift shares in joint owner Ericsson, which were down 2.2 percent at 26.30 crowns at 1004 GMT, in line with an overall weaker market.
Sony Ericsson's sales rose to 16.1 million handsets in the fourth quarter, up from 13.8 million in the previous quarter and 12.6 million in the final three months of 2004.
The firm's average selling price per phone was 143.5 euros, down from 149 euros in the third quarter, while its market share was steady at around 7 percent.
It said it had sold 3 million Walkman handsets and plans to produce a high-speed 3G version of the phone.
"We expect the market to grow in steady fashion (in 2006)," Sony Ericsson president Miles Flint told a conference call.
TO EXPAND IN PHOTOS AND MUSIC
While making a forecast of growth in global handset sales of around 10 percent this year he said it was early to make estimates.
He said the group would focus on producing more phones with cameras and extending the Walkman line.
The group's operating profit margin came in at around 9 percent and Flint said he expected the company could sustain such levels.
Sony Ericsson's fifth place in the market leaves it behind South Korea's LG Electronics (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) and Samsung, U.S. group Motorola (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and market leader Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research).
Motorola, whose slimline RAZR phone has proved popular among consumers, is due to report its fourth-quarter results next week, while Nokia reports on January 26.
Erkki Vesola, analyst at Mandatum in Helsinki, said the Sony Ericsson report was "pretty much in line with expectations".
"It seems the market growth in the fourth quarter was quite good," he added.
Stockholm-based Ohman analyst Helena Nordman-Knutson said Sony Ericsson was set for a steady 2006 amid a sector that was faced with strong competitive challenges.
"A combination of Ericsson's technology and Sony's expertise in music and imaging creates an attractive offer," she said.

Looks like another slew of Walkman handsets are on the way. I hope the novelty doesn't wear off all of a sudden or they will be buggered

I think more handsets should be released where the Walkman branding is be less conspicuous - but thats not for this thread.
