It's a bit of an old wives tale, works maybe nine out of ten times at the best but I think more through luck than judgement.

By the way, don't switch the monitor on whilst you are pressing, if you press too hard while it's switched on you can cause temporary short circuits which could cause more dead / lazy pixels. get your pen pointing at the offending pixel while the screen is on, switch off the monitor, apply gentle pressure and gently move the pen in a circular motion for about a minute or so. Then stop and switch monitor back on.

If it's worked, count yourself very lucky!
