UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Standard) is the name that has been given commercially to the protocol that follows GSM (Global Standard for Mobiles).
Why it is called 3G?
Well, the first generation of mobile phones (1G) was analog. Then, with GSM (digital), came the second generation. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) was an evolution of GSM and provided users with higher data speed and the chance to be "always on", without paying the time of connection, but rather the amount of data transferred.
GPRS has been nicknamed 2.5G because it represented an intermediate step between GSM and UMTS.
UMTS, which is taking more and more market share, is a tecnology based on the WCDMA (Wideband Code Divison Multiple Access) protocol.
Frequencies are as follows:
GSM in Europe worked at the beginning using a 900Mhz Frequency. In order to increase call quality and data rates a new frequency has been added 1800 Mhz (Dual Band phones were born to be able to operate on both frequencies).
In the USA the frequency used by GSM operators is 1900 Mhz (hence the need for a TriBand GSM phone to be able to make calls in the USA).
